What Should You Understand About Overhead Cables Before Your Power Project?

If you look overhead across cities, towns and remote rural landscapes, overhead cables stretch out like unseen arteries, keeping modern communities connected to reliable electricity. They deliver power to high rise city buildings just as they serve scattered homes in far flung villages, forming an indispensable backbone of power transmission worldwide.

What is Overhead Cable?

Overhead cables are power transmission lines suspended in the air via towers or utility poles, consisting of conductors, izolasyon, supporting structures, and fittings. Unlike underground cables, the conductors in overhead cables are directly exposed to the air; this design saves underground space and reduces maintenance costs, making them a common choice for long-distance power transmission and urban power grids.

Main Structures of Overhead Cables

İletkenler: Typically made of aluminum or copper, these transmit electric current. Aluminum conductors are the standard choice for high-voltage lines due to their light weight and cost-effectiveness.

Much like human blood vessels, the larger the conductor’s cross-sectional area, the higher its current carrying capacity. Örneğin, a cable with a cross section of 400 mm²can carry a current of approximately 800 A.

Yalıtım: Overhead insulated cables are designed for complex environments, whereas bare overhead conductors rely on air as the natural insulating medium.

Design for adaptation to special environments:

Coastal areas: Sheathing thickened and treated with flame retardants.

High altitude/cold regions: Cold resistant materials used.

Forest areas: Outer coating treated with bird repellent and colored for high visibility.

Chemical industry zones: Corrosion resistant sheathing used.

Types of Overhead Cables

Based on their application, overhead cables can be classified into the following categories:

Low voltage overhead cables (≤1 kV): Widely deployed for community-level distribution networks.

Medium voltage overhead cables (10-35 kV): Used for urban main power feeders.

Extra-high voltage overhead lines (≥220 kV): Built for long distance, cross regional power transmission.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Overhead Power Lines

Overhead power transmission is widely used in power grids around the world, yet it is not a universal solution.

Key Advantages

The most immediate benefit is cost savings. Underground cabling requires excavating road surfaces, laying protective conduits, and backfilling—a process that entails significant expense. Switching to overhead lines saves a substantial amount on civil engineering costs; the overall construction expense is 40%–60% lower than that of underground cables, making it an ideal choice for electrification projects with limited budgets.

Repairs are also faster. Since the cables are exposed, maintenance crews can easily locate faults without the need for excavation. Actual repair times can be reduced by up to 70%, allowing for quicker power restoration and minimizing losses caused by outages.

They also offer excellent adaptability to terrain. In areas difficult to excavate—such as mountainous regions or swamps—underground cable installation is complex and costly. Tersine, overhead lines rely on utility poles or transmission towers, making electrification possible in regions with challenging environmental conditions.

Dezavantajları

Because the cables are fully exposed outdoors, they are highly susceptible to weather conditions. Severe weather—such as typhoons, thunderstorms, or ice accumulation—can easily cause conductor swaying, lightning-induced flashovers, or even line breakage; consequently, lines in areas with harsh weather require structural reinforcement.

Energized lines generate electromagnetic fields; Öyleyse, strict safety distances must be maintained during construction, ensuring adequate separation from buildings and areas of human activity to mitigate safety risks.

Ek olarak, utility poles and overhead cables can detract from the visual appeal of the cityscape. Many cities factor this into their planning assessments for prime scenic areas, sometimes opting to abandon overhead solutions in favor of underground cables.

Safety Warning

There are hidden safety hazards associated with overhead power lines; please keep the following points in mind during your daily activities:

Do not build houses or sheds directly beneath overhead power lines. Structures that are too close to the conductors pose a severe risk of electric shock, and such unauthorized construction is inherently dangerous.

During thunderstorms, maintain a distance of at least 20 meters from utility poles and transmission towers. Do not approach or linger beneath them to avoid the risk of lightning strikes or electric shock.

If you see a power line that has snapped and fallen to the ground, do not approach it, and under no circumstances should you attempt to move or handle it yourself. Report the situation immediately and wait for professional personnel to arrive and address the issue.
