About BS 6622 Medium Voltage Cable
The most commonly used medium voltage cable under the BS6622 standard is the 11kv voltage, as it can be used for power networks, fixed installations in outdoor cable ducts or directly into the ground, and has a wide range of applications, and is indispensable for a variety of power pr ojects and urban electricity use.
In the range of medium voltage cables, the voltage range goes up to about 33kv and may also reach 35kv or 40kv depending on the standards of different countries.
What is the difference between the common 11kv and 33kv for the same medium voltage cable?
Different Voltage Ratings
- 11kV cable: Rated voltage is generally 6/10kV or 6.35/11kV.
- 33kV cables: the rated voltage is generally 19/33kV or 18/30kV.
The higher the voltage level, the higher the requirements for cable insulation, sheath and other materials.
Different Application Acenarios
11kV Cable | – Mostly used for secondary power supply in urban distribution system, such as from the substation to the user distribution cabinet; – Factories, schools, small industrial parks and other medium-sized load places. |
33kV cable | – Used for backbone power transmission lines, e.g. from substations to multiple lower level transformers; – Suitable for long-distance, high-capacity power transmission, such as wind farms, photovoltaic power stations or large industrial load centers. |
Differences in Structural Design
Due to the higher voltages they are subjected to, 33kV cables have a more complex construction, including thicker insulation (e.g. XLPE), tighter shielding systems (conductive shielding, metallic shielding), sheathing and so on, making them more mechanically protective.
11kV cables, on the other hand, have a simpler construction, but still include the basic conductor shielding, insulation and metal shielding.
11kV vs 33kV Cable Size
Due to the high voltage and thick insulation, 33kV cables are larger and heavier overall, requiring higher costs; installation is more complex in terms of space and labor, and often requires specialized tools and higher standards of construction conditions.
Example:
Item | 11kV 1×240mm² | 33kV 1×240mm² |
Conductor Cross Section | 240 mm² | 240 mm² |
Conductor Diameter | ≈ 17.6 mm | ≈ 17.6 mm |
Insulation thickness | 5.5 mm | 8.0 mm |
Cable weight | ≈ 2.2 kg/m | ≈ 2.8 kg/m |
